Read each scenario very carefully and determine the independent and dependent variable as well as a constant/controlled variable. Read the information below to help refresh your memory on independent and dependent variables.

Variables:

• Independent variable – “The Cause”
  • The thing the researcher changes
• Dependent variable – “The Effect”
  • The result of the experiment
  • The thing being measured
• Controlled variables (also called constants)- are things that stay the same throughout the experiment.
  • In a controlled experiment, the independent variable is the only thing that should be different between experimental groups. Everything else stays the same. These are the controlled variables.
  • Any experiment will have many controlled variables.
